Washing Machine Repairs

Common Faults & Troubleshooting

Automatic washing machines have certainly made family life easier. The days of handwashing clothing is far behind us and we’ve come to rely on these convenient appliances. However, as with all household appliances, things can go wrong. Sometimes, it can be a simple fix but, in most cases, you are better off leaving washing machine repairs to a qualified engineer. Here are some of the common faults that occur with washing machines and what to do when things go wrong.

Washing Machine Not Turning On

There are a number of reasons your washing machine does not have power. Some are simple to take care of while others need professional attention.

What You Can Do

  • Check that your machine is plugged in. It may seem silly, but you’d be surprised at how many people have called a repairman in, only to have him plug in the machine and everything works fine.
  • Make sure you close the door properly. The machine won’t start unless everything is nice and tight.
  • Check your water supply. The machine can’t start without filling with water. This can be a real problem in cold winter areas. Your water may be turned on, but it’s frozen in the pipes.
  • Most homes have a circuit breaker. Check that to ensure that the switch hasn’t disconnected.
  • Examine the cable. Is it frayed or damaged?
  • Are all the lights flashing? This is usually a sign of trouble.
  • Look at the panel. Are there any lights on? If so, then it’s obviously plugged in so, if you still can’t get it to work, it could be a bigger problem.

Leave It For The Experts

  • Anything that requires your machine to be opened, or taken apart, is best left for our engineers. This is especially important if your machine is still under warranty.

Washing Machine Not Cleaning Clothes

There is a chance that your detergent line is blocked. Some laundry powders can clump, causing a blockage. The problem could also be a blockage in the drainage pipe or filter.

What You Can Do

  • Check the detergent draw. There could be a lump of caked powder sitting right behind the draw. Removing the blockage and letting the machine run on quick cycle should fix that.
  • Make sure you are using good quality detergent. We all want to save money, but you are more likely to throw in more detergent if you use the cheaper varieties. Your other alternative is to switch to liquid detergents.
  • If you’ve cleaned your machine, let it run through one empty cycle and your clothes still aren’t being cleaned, you may have a blocked or faulty drainage line. Give our friendly team a call today. We can resolve the issue for you.

Washing Machine Not Draining

The first sign of a drainage problem with your washing machine is soggy, wet clothes and a drum full of water. There could be a blockage somewhere, or it could be that the pump is no longer working.

What You Can Do

  • Check around the opening to the drum. Look for items such as keys, coins and other items. They could be causing a blockage. Also, empty the filter under your machine.
  • Turn your machine on to the rinse cycle and listen. If you can’t hear the machine when it should be draining you have a bigger problem.
  • Check the hoses to make sure they aren’t blocked.
  • If your machine isn’t draining after you’ve cleaned the doorway, filters and hoses, then call one of our engineers. Whether it’s the pump, or something else, the machine will need to be opened and this is a job for an expert. Call us to book one today.

Washing Machine Not Spinning

The spin cycle is important as it wrings out the excess water. This means your clothes are just slightly damp rather than wet and, they’ll dry faster. A machine that won’t spin is usually the result of an overloaded machine. This may cause your machine to become unbalanced, hence the lack of spin.

What You Can Do

  • Try not to overload your machine. This is especially important if you are washing a load of towels or blankets. These items tend to soak up a lot of water and will become very heavy inside your machine.
  • Another reason your machine won’t spin is if it can’t drain. Check for blocked pipes, hoses and filters.
  • Turn the drum in your machine. If the belt drive is in good condition, you will get some resistance. If you can turn your drum with ease, your belt drive may be broken.
  • Apart from putting in less bulky items to be washed and unblocking doors, hoses and filters, all other issues should be left to the experts. Call us to book today.

Washing Machine Leaking

Nothing is more frustrating than a leaky washing machine. You don’t just have a faulty machine to deal with, but also a flooded area around the machine.

What You Can Do

  • The problem could be with the detergent you are using. If it produces excessive suds or you are adding too much detergent to your wash, the suds may result in the drum overfilling and spilling over.
  • Check that your machine is level. A machine that is not level it will jostle during washing and water can splash out.
  • Other things you can do, check that all the hoses are properly and tightly connected. Check the hoses from cracks and also check the rubber seal around the door.
  • If you’ve adjusted your detergent, levelled your machine and checked the hoses and seals and the machine is still leaking then it could be anything from a faulty pump, or another problem inside the machine. Call our team today.

Leave It For The Experts

  • If you regularly check and clean your lint filter and your clothes are still covered in lint, airflow in your tumble dryer may not be functioning as it should. It may be time to call in an expert.

Washing Machine Won’t Finish Its Cycle

Most machines have multiple programs for washing. You have a long wash for heavy fabrics or clothes are very soiled and a delicate cycle for satin and lace. If you find your machine gets stuck in one phase of washing and won’t finish its full cycle, it’s time to pull out the user manual.

What You Can Do

  • Your user manual will have certain error codes to signify the problem. The user manual will tell you which flashing lights indicate each specific problem. You can check some areas of the machine for leaks or damaged hoses and blockages. Once you’ve cleaned your machine and relieved it of debris and blockages. Try to turn it on again. If you’ve still got issues, call in the experts.
  • Other reasons your machine won’t finish its cycle could be the programmer has short-circuited, the water pump is faulty and the heater may have a broken thermostat. Call in our engineers to get to the root of the problem.
